Eating Mindfully

Each time you sit to eat a meal, a community gathers around you.
As an eater, you acknowledge the sacred domains of life: the earth and its
riches, the pride of farmers and the joy of being alive.

As an eater, you design your own existence.

You are called to the table by familiar fragrances that reach out to you from the
kitchen. As you gaze at the food prepared for you, you can remember how
much you are loved. You can remember the farmer who grew the vegetables, the
harvester that gathered them, the merchant who displayed them and the hands
that prepared them.

Your meal is like life: the contribution of many is always present in a single
moment.

Eat mindfully so your whole body will feel the sacred message food brings to
you.

Eating Mindfully:

Commentary

Awake! Awake! O sleeper

Of the Land of Shadows,

Awaken! Expand! (William Blake,”Jeruselem”)

Our relationship with food began in our mother’s womb. From her body, our body grew.

After birth her feeding continued. Her mindfulness determined our health.

For years we ate for pleasure, without shame!

We ate for fun!

We ate with curiosity!

We allowed our mouth to taste whatever it saw!

We touched our food without caring about where it landed on our face!

During our childhood we gave eating our full and unembarrassed attention!

Gradually, however, we learned to be suspicious of food because it could spoil our beauty and distract from our goodness. Sadly, the person who fed us may have separated us from the blessings of food. We may have lost the sacred freedom to enjoy what our body graves. Now, to be conscious of the Earth we share, we must be appreciative of the food it provides, because each time we Eat Mindfully we agree somewhere ‘inside’ to continue to live.
