Believing in Magic

Do you believe in magic? Yes, of course you do!

As a child you watched with a wide eyed innocence as a rabbit was pulled from a hat or a coin was taken from behind your ear. You couldn't figure it out, nor could you prove it untrue.

As you grew older you believed in another kind of magic: the magic of love, of sacrifice, of thinness, of your fullness, of softness, of devotion and so many others ideals. These magical ideals of your life continued to expand until it was thought to be life itself.

What makes a magical trick powerful? The belief that it's true.

The magic of your childhood entertained you. The magic of your adulthood entrapped you.

Before you call anything true, give it the test of your scrutiny. Let your wisdom and the collective wisdom of your sisters question the magic that takes your life away.

Your life has its own magic that you bring to every moment you live. Your life is much more believable, admirable, and honorable the way you were meant to live it: magically.

Do you remember the first time you saw?

  • A rabbit being pulled out of a hat…
  • A woman being sawed in half…
  • A man swallowing a sword?

Our fascination with magic is ageless! Why do we want to believe in the ‘illusion of magic’ as if it were true?
Magic is our trip into the:

  • Unbelievable
  • Unimaginable
  • Unpredictable
  • Unexplainable

Magic seems easy as it defies reason. It’s entertaining as it defies reality. We may love magic because it ‘skips’ the hard work life requires. Perhaps magic’s highest purpose is to remind us that our lives can be:

  • Unbelievably peaceful
  • Unpredictably successful
  • Unexplainably happy

“I want to be magic. I want to touch the heart of the world and make it smile. I want to be a friend to the elves and live in a tree, or under a hill. I want to marry a moon beam and hear the stars sing. I don’t want to pretend at magic anymore. I want to be magic.” (Charles de Lint)

Let’s talk, because talking is magical.
